Joan Rose presents a special public talk, May 2021

During the Spring 2021 semester, the University of Arizona’s WEST Center welcomed Dr. Joan Rose as a visiting professor. Dr. Rose is an international authority on water microbiology, water quality, and public health safety, recognized for her research on microbial risk to human health in water. While at WEST, Dr. Rose has focused on projects to advance microbial risk assessment related to SARS-CoV-2 variants in wastewater.

In a special public talk, premiering on May 5 at 4 PM, Dr. Rose offers a look into her career from earning her PhD at the University of Arizona, with Dr. Charles Gerba as her mentor, to her significant contributions to the understanding of water microbiology and its use in monitoring water quality to improve public health.

Joining Dr. Rose for a panel discussion following her talk, Dr. Gerba and newly-named Regents Professor and director of the WEST Center Dr. Ian Pepper ask questions about Dr. Rose’s studies, the projects they’ve worked on together, and what advice to give to future researchers. They also engage in a discussion about the importance of the ongoing pandemic, and how the tools to monitor public health through wastewater testing can serve future public health crises.
