Kaitlin Murphy

Kaitlin M. Murphy is Assistant Professor of Latin American Cultural Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona. She is affiliate faculty in the Center for Latin American Studies and on the Executive Committee for Global Studies where she serves as faculty liaison for the Human Rights, Migrations, and Social Movements track. She is also on the Executive Committee for Human Rights Direct and on the Executive Council of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics.

Her interdisciplinary research interests focus on intersections of art, politics, theory, and human rights in contemporary Latin America. She is especially interested in the production and uses of visual art, film, theater, performance, and writing in human rights advocacy and activism in Latin America, in the contexts of dictatorships, transitional justice and truth seeking processes, memory politics, and the borderlands. She received her PhD in Performance Studies from New York University and holds a masters degree in Visual Culture from the same university. Her writing can be found in Human Rights Review, emisférica, and in the Theatre/Performance Anthology: Time, Space, Matter (2015).
