Marcel Schaap

Professor of Environmental Physics, Department of Environmental Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Joint with Hydraulic and Atmospheric Sciences, College of Science

My research has included work NASA, NSF and DOD projects to study the effects of soil texture on soil hydraulic properties using machine learning; measurement and modeling of an artificial contamination plume in the sediments at the Department of Energy’s Hanford site in Washington State; and work with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop soil electrical measurement methods for Lunar and Martian soils. Other DOE-funded projects include observations and modeling fluid behavior at the microscale in porous media. Recent work includes work on the effects of climate change (and climate change mitigation) on the hydrology of soils. This work has produced several high-resolution maps of soil hydraulic characteristics. My work is typically published in Water Resources Research, Journal of Hydrology and Geophysical Research Letters.
